v1.0 is finally out! (some sort of post-mortem)
It's been almost a year since I've started developing this game for the 1-button game jam, and a lot of things have changed since then, starting from the fact that Key Out ended up being a 2 button game.
I think I derailed a lot with the development of this game: not having a clear goal, following every advice, following no advice, wanting to do a lot, wanting to do the bare minimum... I never really settled with a "final scope" for the game, so I kinda went with what I felt the game was needing (although most of the time it was just me trying "cool ideas" and wasting a lot of time doing so).
Honing gameplay and gamefeel got me obsessed, and in that search for the perfect gameplay I ended up hurting the development process and the game itself. More than once I was very close to abandon this project (as piles of other projects in the past) but I decided to suck it up and just finish it, no matter if it ended up falling short to reach the heights of my expectations. And in the end, I did finished it.
I'm very proud of this game. Not because it is fun, nor because it is polished or whatever other artistic or technical quality it has, but because I strived to see it finished and published. It's a silly short boxing game with a silly story filled up with a big ratio of profane words just because. But it is done and I can be proud of that and, eventually, start a new exiting project.
My takeaway from the development of this game would be something like this:
"Don't demand a game to be more than what it is."
Throughout the whole process, I wanted the game to be so much more than what it was, and it failing to do so and me failing to recognize that my expectations were insanely high just drove me crazy until it finally clicked on me and I could move on to see what was missing and just do that and ship the game.
Thanks for reading :)
Hope to see you soon!
